This project involved the major renovation and addition to the existing 48,500 sq. ft. facility which housed one ice surface. The addition included a second ice surface as well as a community centre/multi-purpose area and additional dressing rooms. The addition also includes a soccer dome (air supported structure).
M&R Engineering was responsible for mechanical design including HVAC, Plumbing and Fire Protection, electrical design including Lighting, Power, Communications and Security and energy modelling for utility incentives.
Key Facts:
- A low-emissivity ceiling was installed to reduce loads on the ice plant.
- The existing building used electric heating which was replaced by an integrated ice plant heat recovery system and an oil-fired boiler plant for supplemental heat. After the sportsplex is heated, excess heat is used in the soccer dome.
- The existing lighting in all areas other than the ice sheet was upgraded (the lighting for the existing ice sheet was recently upgraded).
- Service hot water for ice making and domestic hot water are preheated by waste heat from the ice plant.
- New heat recovery ventilators provide fresh air to the dressing rooms and air handling units.
- Variable Speed drives are installed on circulation pumps to save electricity and provide greater control.
- Occupancy sensors are installed to reduce lighting power when rooms are unoccupied.
